I interview and assess candidates every day so it was a real wake-up call last week when I found myself in a very similar position. The time had arrived for us to enter the ‘dragons den’ of National Business Award judges and convince them we are worthy winners of the Excellence in Marketing Award.
Just like a candidate who has been matched to a vacancy would feel going to the interview, we knew we were worthy finalists but we had to convince this panel of marketing guru judges! I have to admit I was petrified; all of the same principles of interviewing came into play. Had I done enough research? Was I wearing the right clothes? Have we explained our strategy clearly enough? Did I answer the questions correctly?
I’m pleased to say we left the Gherkin building in London with our heads held high, straight into the All Bar One over the road! Our ‘offer letter’ hopefully awaits us at the Awards ceremony on 8th November, but what ever happens it’s been a fantastic achievement and experience to get this far. Click here to watch our show reel that we played as a part of our presentation to ‘the dragons”.
It seemed appropriate to stick with the interview theme this month, so take a look at our Top 10 interview blunders feature below; great advice if you’re a candidate but also good for ‘interviewing judges’ to remember how the pressure feels. There’s also an Interview Techniques section in Impact Extra for further hints and tips. The experience certainly took me back!
